Welcome to the homework page! Weekly homework assignments will be posted here. 

*Please remember that you are responsible for recording your homework assignments as they are given in-class, and that your planner should be your primary resource for seeing what homework is due. :) 

Assignments posted here in advance are subject to change at any time at my discretion, based on what we've covered in class.

If you did not complete all four discussion questions in class today, finish them for homework tonight. The questions are on the home page.

Homework for TUES, 3/28

Chp. 24 Reading Check questions (to be completed in class tomorrow):

1. What does Sam Westing's fifteenth letter say to the heirs?

2. What is the answer to the game?

3. The judge puts up a strong argument after the answer is found. What is her argument? (What reasons are given for the heirs to not accuse the person mentioned in the previous question?)

4. What happens to Sandy during the meeting?

5. Why do you think (the person whose name is the answer) gives him/herself away?


Homework for WED, 3.22

Bring in two pieces of trash (we discussed what type of trash in class).


Homework for Mon., 3/20

Using the questions you completed in class, finish your opinion paragraph. Remember to have a strong topic sentence, to state your opinion regarding the use of biotechnology to resurrect extinct species, and to use at least two pieces of evidence from the text to support your argument. Also, if you did not complete it in class already, please read the back page and complete the 5 multiple choice questions.



Reading Check Questions, Chapter 14:

1. What are two new things you learned about Sandy McSouthers?

2. On what do Judge Ford and Sandy agree (regarding Sam Westing's motive)?

3. Describe Denton Deere's attitude/personality.

4. Why hasn't Chris signed the check? (What is he trying to accomplish by not signing yet?)

5. While visiting Sydelle at the hospital, what does Angela find in her tapestry bag?



Reading Check Questions for Monday, 3/6 (Chapter 10):

1. How does Judge Ford know that Grace is lying to her about her relation to Sam Westing?

2. On page 58, the narrator states that "The party went on and on. No one dared be first to leave. (Safety in numbers, especially with a judge there.)" Why were people afraid to leave the party?

3. What's wrong with Angela? (This answer will require more than once sentence.)

4. Are the heirs at the party just to have a good time? If not, why are they there? What are they all doing?

Finish constructing your opening paragraph. Remember, the structure is as follows:
- Opening statement/attention grabber
- Background (summarize the plot in a very small nutshell)
- Thesis statement (claim, reason, reason, reason)

Week of 12/12 *There will be no vocab this week*

Monday: Read chapter 11 and fill out as much as you can in the Characterization and Plot sections of your Literary Elements notebook. Remember, plot refers to specific events happening in the story. Jot down the major events that have occurred. You should have about 6 or 7.

Tues: Read chapter 12. In class tomorrow, your reading check will require you to write a short, 3 to 4-sentence summary of the chapter.

Wed: Read chapter 13 and answer the questions that are posted to the home page (answer them at home and bring them tomorrow).

Thurs: None/concert tonight

Friday: Read chaptes 14 & 15; reading check questions for Monday (in-class) are on the home page


Week of 12/5

Monday: Unit 7 Vocab, CTRW

Tuesday: Synonyms/Antonyms

Wednesday: Prepare for "Vocabulary Fashion Show" tomorrow (details TBA, stay tuned)

Thursday: Study for your Unit 7 Vocab Assessment

Friday: Continue to finish reading chapters 8 - 10 and complete the questions (questions are posted to the home page)

Monday - CTRW Unit 7

Wednesday - Read chapter 6. The following questions will help you prepare for tomorrow's in-class reading check (you will answer them in class):

1. What do Peter and Susan realize when Edmund declares that they should be aiming for the lamppost?

2. What happened to Mr. Tumnus?

3. What does the note mean by "comforting the Queen's enemies and fraternizing with humans"?

4. How does the robin lead the children toward Mr. Tumnus?

Thursday - reading check questions for in-class reading check:
*Please note that #3 is an opinion question. For this question, you will be graded on explaining your ideas. 

1. Why are the children reluctant to follow the beaver?

2. Describe the mood/feeling in the room when Mr. Beaver mentions Aslan for the first time.

3. On page 70, as Edmund realizes that the White Witch is close, we find out that "horrible thoughts" have entered his head. What kind of thoughts do you think he is having?*

4. In what way do the children interact with Mr. and Mrs. Beaver during dinner? (Are they acting as guests? What are they doing while dinner is being prepared?)

Friday: Finish the reading packet and the 10 questions attached. Please bring in your index spiral or small notebook for Literary Elements by Monday.







Reading check questions for Chapter 3 (rdg. check in-class on Tuesday, 11/22):

1. Why did Lucy think her siblings would be worried about her?

2. Why are the next few days miserable for Lucy?

3. What is one of the first clues (for Edmund) that Edmund is no longer in a wardrobe?

4. Why does Edmund think Lucy isn't answering him?

5. Describe the "Queen of Narnia."

Thurs, 11/10: Proofread your draft with your proofreading checklist and bring a printout to class tomorrow if possible.

Friday, 11/11: After peer-editing in class, polish your draft over the weekend and have it ready to turn in on Monday.

The answers will be due the following Monday. Pace yourself throughout the week; read a few pages each night and try to answer one or two questions per evening.

Monday: Vocab Unit 1, Choosing the Right Word

Tuesday: Read Cleopatra pages 34 - 41 (read on pg. 41 until "22 Januarius"). Reading check questions (to be completed for Wednesday's drill, in-class):
1. Why doesn't Berenice enjoy going to the agora?
2. Why is it so important for Cleopatra to hide her identity right now?
3. Why is the man at the agora willing to give his alligators away for free?
4. What are the boys singing about as they fish?
5. Describe what Olympus finds nailed to the stables.


Wednesday: Read pages 41 - 49  in Cleopatra; reading check tomorrow for drill. Questions:
1. What did Puzo find on the island? What does this mean for Cleopatra? (2 pts)
2. What is Olympus teaching Cleopatra?
3. Who is Theophilus?
4. How do they keep the flame in the lighthouse lit?
5. How does Cleopatra know that the ship leaving the harbor is not her father's?

Thursday: Vocab Unit 1, Completing the Sentence. Study for Unit 1 Vocab Assessment tomorrow.

Friday:  Read pgs. 50 - 61 in Cleopatra; reading check Monday will be a quick summary of what you read (no specific questions).


Week of 9/5

Tuesday: Complete Independent Clauses worksheet. This will be collected.

Wednesday: Read pgs. 9-17 in Cleopatra; reading check tomorrow.

Thursday: Write one paragraph (5 sentences minimum) to summarize our Fishbowl Discussion today. Highlight anything you thought was interesting, things you may have disagreed with, and anything new you learned about the story. (This can be hand-written or typed.)

Friday: Read pgs. 20 - 33 in Cleopatra and be prepared to write a short three- to five-sentence summary of what you read as your reading check on Monday.



Thursday, 9/1 - Complete the subjects and predicates practice posted to the home page.
Friday, 9/2 - Use the web to research the real Cleopatra; record three facts about her and cite your sources.
